If you are a Dancing with the stars fan then you’ve probably fallen in love with Amy Purdy during this season 18. But even if you are not a fan of the show you should fall in love with her truly inspirational story.
At the age of 19 she thought she had her life of travel and adventure all figured out. She was saving money as a massage therapist to travel the world and hitting the slopes on her snowboard whenever possible. This all changed in a moment when flu like symptoms began and within 24 hours she was in the hospital fighting for her life. Diagnosed with Bacterial Meningitis she was given a 2% chance to live. Well, Amy beat those odds but did loose both her legs below the knee along with her kidney function. Thankfully her father was a match and she was able to receive one of his kidneys. Amy is every so grateful for this gift from her father and shares this story in week 3 of DWS. (see link below)
Amy’s story is one of how “our borders or obstacles can either stop us in our tracks or force us to get creative.” She made a choice….. “instead of being limited by these legs I began to think of the unlimited possibilities because of these legs.” And that she did. Her list of accomplishments range from Bronze Medal winner for adaptive snowboarding in this years 2014 Sochi Olympics to founder of a non-profit organization Adaptive Action Sports , which helps adaptive athletes get involved in action sports, art, and music.
When she began this season 18 of Dancing with the Stars I’m sure most viewers thought what a great story, but never imagined her making to the finals and finishing 2nd place. But week after week Amy kept having breakthrough moment after breakthrough moment. The rehearsal clip would show her different challenges of figuring out what type of feet would work best, how to balance on them, and how to move her body so her feet would move gracefully. Then you’d see the performance and it would all just come together. She was not only able to move beautifully and gracefully but it was the emotion and the story conveyed through her movement that left you in awe.
Every week was amazing but see the below links for some of my favorite moments….
WEEK 3 CONTEMPORARY DANCE- MOST MEMORABLE YEAR –This was Amy’s story and tribute to her dad for giving her a kidney. This was also the week that she discovered using swimming feet would best help her movement and give her pointed toes!
WEEK 5 THE WALTZ – DISNEY WEEK – You see Amy as a true Cinderella story. It was also a tough week for her saying “I could do this if I had legs.” And ending with judge Carrie Anne Inaba saying “I hope Disney will make their next princess like you.”
WEEK 6 THE JIVE – This week left me the most jaw dropped stunned. How Amy danced and moved in this performance makes you realize anyone can do anything.
WEEK 10 FREESTYLE – The story all comes together with Amy’s freestyle ending with her soaring in the air. I dare you to do anything you put your mind to.
