FIERCE CARROT ORANGE SMOOTHIE

 

The hubs is coming down with a summer cold so I wanted to fix him up a vitamin C smoothie with some carrots and oranges.  And of course I’ve always gotta throw in a little spinach and avocado so that I feel like it’s not too full of fruit and has some greens in it!  But the greens make the juice not quite have that orange vibrant color, oh well I don’t mind.  But if you do then maybe cut back on the greens.

FIERCE CARROT ORANGE SMOOTHIE

Serves: 3
 
A vitamin C packed orange smoothie
Ingredients
  • 2 oranges
  • 4 carrots
  • 1 banana *frozen preferred
  • a small handful of strawberries *frozen is nice
  • a handful of spinach
  • ½ an avocado
  • ¼ a lemon
  • ¼ an inch of ginger
  • 1 TBS of Chia Seeds *optional but I love chia seeds in all my smoothies
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in the blender and blend away. I like to blend for about 10 minutes.
Notes
Avocado is optional and makes the smoothie a bit thicker
Spinach is also optional but you won't taste it, just makes the smoothie a bit more green in color then orange.

MY JOURNEY TO JUICING

So you know I drink a juice or blended juice at least once a day and most days twice a day.  It all started on a whim, which is not like me, I like to research and plan….But there the Hubs and I were at Target in Jan of 2013 and we saw a deal on a NINJA BLENDER.  I had been thinking about  juicing after hearing about so much about it.  I had also recently read Kris Carr’s CRAZY SEXY DIET where she discussing the benefits of eating veggies and juicing.  The Hubs must have liked the power of the motor and he was in.  So we bought it!

I got home and posted my new purchase to Facebook and Instagram.  I received lot’s of great recipes from friends and did some research on my own and started pinning to Pinterest.  And blending up some juices I began….I’ll be honest I was a little nervous as to how my digestive track would react, so I think I tried my first juice on the weekend.  But it was totally fine, it did make things a little easier, but there were no emergencies.

So drinking a juice every day I went, and I started to feel amazing.  My energy increased, my stomach(prone to aches) was feeling good, and afternoon sugary or coffee cravings disappeared.  I still have my morning cup of coffee, then usually a juice, followed by breakfast.  Then for a mid afternoon snack I’ll sometimes have another juice.  I do not do any cleanses or meal replacements with my juicing, I just like it as a supplement to my diet to help increase fruit and veggie intake.

Over the past 18 months of juicing I’ve discovered what I personally like in my juices and blended smoothies.  (6 months after buying the NINJA the Hubs bought me an OMEGA VERT JUICER for my birthday)  My favorite blended juice is the FIERCELY GREEN SMOOTHIE full of Spinach/Kale and is so alkalinizing for the body which calms my stomach.  My favorite juice is the FIERCELY RED PINEAPPLE BEET JUICE which is so iron rich.  A few tips I’ve discovered…

-I usually reserve leafy greens like Kale and Spinach for blending vs. juicing as they do not output much juice.

-As much as I love Kale I tend to use Spinach more because Kale can get a bit frothy in my drinks.

-I love to juice Ginger but it’s a bit too strong in a blended juice.

-My favorite veggies to juice are Beets and Sweet Potatoes as they have the best juice output and so nutritious!

FIERCELY GREEN SMOOTHIE

Here is my recipe for my absolute favorite green smoothie.  I make this about 3 times a week! I pack my Ninja Blender full to make enough juice to last me about 2 days, just depends on how much the Hubs drinks!

FIERCELY GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE

2 Apples

1/2 a lemon

Spinach-fill to the top line of the blender (can use Kale too, but I find it makes my smoothies very frothy)

1-2 teaspoons of Chia Seeds

Fill half way with water and blend for about 10 minutes!

*extras- sometimes I’ll add 1/4-1/2 of an avocado, or 1/4 of a cucumber, or wheatgrass.  Just depends how I feel that day or what I have in my fridge.
